Laptop won't turn on? What to check before you book a repair
Simple checks that fix some power problems, and the signs that mean you should stop and call a technician.
Start with the power
- Try a different wall outlet or power strip
- Check the charger cable for damage and the plug for looseness
- Look for a charging light on the laptop or the charger
- If you have a second compatible charger, try it
Do a power reset
- Unplug the charger and disconnect every accessory, such as USB drives and printers
- Hold the power button for 15 to 30 seconds
- Plug the charger back in and press the power button once
Is it on but black?
If you hear fans or see lights but no picture, connect an external monitor. If a picture appears, the problem is likely the screen or its cable. See laptop screen replacement.
Stop and call a technician if
- The laptop got wet or liquid was spilled on it
- It smells burnt or the battery looks swollen
- It beeps or shows an error and then shuts off
- You have important files with no backup
Do not keep trying if liquid was involved. If your files matter most, read about data recovery, then book a laptop repair.
Common questions
Why does my laptop have a charging light but will not start?
It could be a failed battery, a faulty power connection or a motherboard fault. A power reset is worth trying, then call a technician if it still fails.
Can a dead battery stop a laptop from starting?
Yes, in some laptops. A faulty battery or charging circuit can stop it from powering on even when plugged in.
Will I lose my data if I bring it in?
Many repairs do not touch your data, but back up first if you can. If you cannot start the laptop, ask us about getting your files off it.
